The Glinka competition of vocalists is one of the oldest, most representative and prestigious music competitions in Russia is held since 1960. From 1968 to 2009, for more than 40 years, the permanent Chairman of the Jury was the great singer and teacher, People’s Artist of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor, winner of the Lenin Prize and State Prizes of Russia, academician, professor Irina Konstantinovna Arkhipova, for whom this was a matter of life. After the passing of the great singer, the Competition was held in 2014, and then revived in 2019 on the initiative of the Merited Artist of the Russian Federation, People’s Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan, winner of the G. Tukai State Prize, winner of the 1st prize of the XXI International Glinka competition of vocalists – Albina Shagimuratova, the Competition took place again, confirming its high reputation among professionals and fans of classical academic vocal art. The jury of the XXVI International Glinka competition of vocalists was headed by Albina Shagimuratova.
2024 is the year of the 220th anniversary of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, the founder of the Russian classical music, or as Stasov called him “the creator of the new Russian language in music,” whose work influenced the formation of many Russian composers of subsequent generations, especially Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky.
Our goal is to make the Competition regular and international again, to give young talented vocalists the opportunity to show themselves, to provide comprehensive financial and organizational support to the winners.
The Competition will be held in a full-time format from October 8 to October 16, 2024. The Competition consists of a qualifying round (selection by video recordings) and three main rounds: first, second and third (final). All candidates who have submitted the necessary documents and materials participate in the qualifying round (based on video recordings). The selection of candidates for participation in the qualifying round (by video recordings) will be carried out on the basis of the submitted videos and submitted documents.
According to the decision of the selection committee, no more than 60 people (30 men and 30 women) will be admitted to the first round. After three days of listening, 25 people are allowed to participate in the second round (performing to the accompaniment of a piano). 11 participants will be admitted to the final (performance accompanied by a symphony orchestra).
The venue of the Competition – the Chamber and the Grand Halls of the Moscow concert hall ‘Zaryadye’ was not chosen by chance. This relatively new cultural point in Moscow is characterized by good acoustics, very “convenient” for vocalists, which is noted by reputable artists who have performed on this stage.
At the end of the Competition in October 2024, it is planned for the winners of the Competition and some members of the Jury to visit the small homeland of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka. As part of this trip, an excursion to Glinka’s ancestral estate, the Novospasskoye Estate will be organized, as well as a concert of Laureates and Jury members of the XXVII Glinka competition of vocalists at the Smolensk Regional Philharmonic, which will become an important cultural event for the Smolensk region.
The results of the competition are very important for the subsequent professional career of young artists. Almost all the singers of Russia and the CIS countries, who have been firmly occupying a leading place on the domestic and world opera stages for decades, are laureates and diploma holders of the M. I. Glinka Competition of different years. Among the laureates of the competition are Vladimir Atlantov, Alexander Voroshilo, Galina Gorchakova, Gegham Grigoryan, Sergey Leiferkus, Yuri Mazurok, Evgeny Nesterenko, Elena Obraztsova, Maria Gulegina, Olga Borodina, Dmitry Hvorostovsky, Vladimir Chernov, Anna Netrebko, Askar Abdrazakov, Ildar Abdrazakov, Sergey Murzaev, Olga Trifonova, Elena Manistina, Mikhail Kazakov, August Amonov, Anna Viktorova, Albina Shagimuratova, Maria Barakova, Konstantin Suchkov and others.
